Equi-pF is “set and forget”. To operate:
- The soil sample is loaded onto the instrument and is not handled again until the end of the test.
- Equi-pF automatically saturates the soil sample and measures the amount of water taken up during saturation.
- Equi-pF then applies a series of pre-determined tension steps, measuring the amount of water released by the soil core at hydraulic equilibrium at each tension step.
- Measurements can be taken for both drying and wetting cycles, and repeated drying and wetting cycles are possible.
- Equi-pF automatically calculates the moisture release curves for both the drying and wetting cycles.
These two figures show the effects of sample height and grain size on the water retention properties.
- The 2cm 12/20 Accusand sample did not produce a clear inflection point near the capillary fringe.
- The 6cm 12/20 Accusand sample showed a clear inflection point near the capillary fringe.
- Both the 2cm and 6cm 40/50 Accusand samples showed a clear inflection point near the capillary fringe.
